My name is Rebeca Holden, I'm a Wellington born artist and graphic designer, currently residing in Whitemans Valley just north of the capital with my husband and our two sons.
My background is in graphic design and I have been a designer and illustrator for 13 years now. It has been in recent years that I have taken my creativity to the canvas.
After the birth of my first son in 2003 I started to explore painting more and I took up life drawing classes to build on my drawing skills and explore new medium. My favourite medium is oils.
I am exploring symbolism in my work. Sometimes the meaning appears to be immediate but more often there is more than first meets the eye. Each of the elements are placed for a purpose and I try to create a sense that there is something beyond the canvas that those represented in it are involved in.
I enjoy painting the figure and like to explore the way light and shadow falls on the human form. I also like to capture expressions that suggests a hint of the thoughts of the figure. People are such interesting creatures!
